Report: Fox Sports website compromised to serve malware

A web security company has reported that hackers last week compromised a page on foxsports.com to redirect site visitors to a website hosting malware. The company, eSoft, reported the malicious page to Fox Sports, which removed it from the site.

According to eSoft, the popular Fox Sports website was compromised on a fantasy baseball page that contained a hidden iframe that retrieved content from the malicious site.

"The URL used for the attack was part of the Fantasy Baseball Hot Streak game," eSoft reported on its threat blog. "Hot Streak Fantasy Baseball users should check their machines for any signs of infection or malicious activity."

The company said it reported the malicious content to Fox Sports, but as of Monday, eSoft was "still detecting hacked pages being used to serve up viruses to Fox Sports visitors."

Hackers compromising legitimate websites to serve up malware to unsuspecting visitors is a growing threat on the web that exploits the trust web users place in well-known brands.

Recently, the New York Times website was compromised by a phony advertisement containing a type of malware known as rogueware or scareware. The malware hijacks a user's web browser with a warning that their PC has been infected by a virus.

The scam is used to convince people to download a phony anti-virus product.
